Introduction Post

Hello all, my name is Samuel Moore. I am currently pursuing my goal of becoming an English teacher. One very important aspect of the technologically advancing world is how these new technologies can be applied to the classroom. There are various benefits as well as negatives to advancing technology. As of writing this, one of the most controversial pieces of technology is artificial intelligence. The fear that artificial intelligence presents is that it can completely strip students of needing to do mental work/ learning to complete assignments. While the idea of a computer writing a paper may appear desirable for students, these papers generally contain many errors and lack the actual content that is needed for an effective paper. Another use that artificial intelligence can be used for is to assist in finding reputable sources for writing a paper. Despite the potential benefits of this idea, in actuality, artificial intelligence struggles to consistently present quality sources. During one of my English classes, we did an exercise where we tried to find sources using artificial intelligence. While we were able to find some good sources, overall, the results showed that artificial intelligence either completely made up sources that did not exist or provided results that were not peer-reviewed or of much quality. Additionally, the results that were promising required us to do additional research to discover whether the source was reputable or not. For these reasons, I do not currently feel that artificial intelligence is in a good enough state to be effectively used within the classroom. However, I do believe that this process will change and that artificial intelligence will become safer for students to use as a tool as opposed to a crutch. I believe that it is also the duty of educators to inform students about the correct usage of artificial intelligence so they know the proper way to utilize it and cite its usage. For now, I believe artificial intelligence should be used exclusively for finding sources, generating ideas, and used to assist in understanding difficult topics/concepts. Again, these potentially positive uses need to be fact-checked and verified by the user in order to ensure the stability of answers.

  1. Hello Samuel!
I agree there are arguments to be made on both fronts of a pros and cons list for the use of technology in a classroom setting. It really comes down to personal preference.
I really enjoyed you sharing the experiment you did in class with artificial intelligence. You can really find many flaws when you search hard or long enough. It’s very scary how rapidly AI has gained such popularity in a short amount of time. It is understandable why many teachers would not want their students to have access to such faulty ware.

  2. Hey Samuel!

I enjoyed that you chose a controversial topic for this prompt. It is definitely interesting to see the influence of AI in classrooms and how it creates a sense of dependency towards information that might not even exist at all. I think one thing that makes AI so controversial through a teacher 's perspective is that it is so easy to access opinions on an assigned prompt through AI, manifesting a lack of critical thinking that those prompts challenge students to assess.

However, there are definitely ways to make AI usable and effective, especially when it comes to sparking ideas and as you said to be used as a sort of "crutch". I also agree with you in which it is the teacher's responsibility to make students aware of proper usage. At the end of the day, creating a balance is key to making successful teaching environments! Loved this post!

  3. Hi Samuel, I think you had some great points when it comes to using AI in classrooms. I as well touched on the negatives of Artificial intelligence used in classroom settings. I think technology in general has its positives and negatives but it really comes down to the use of AI specifically in my opinion since its easily accessible and also students using it can lessen their chances of actually using their original thoughts and ideas which is a very important way to advance their critical thinking skills and strategies. Not only that but Ai is not reliable and environmentally friendly.
