Poetry - Writing vs Writing About

After the in-class activities about writing and performing our own poetry, I find that I have a different perspective on poetry. One of the main differences between writing poetry as opposed to writing about it is that for your own poetry, you know exactly what the author's intentions are, but when writing about another person's poetry, you are trying to decipher their message. While this is a difference, I do not think it is negative because making interpretations of other people's poetry that have meaning to the reader is still very important. One aspect of writing your own poetry is that it can make writing about another's poetry less intimidating. I found that it serves as a good reminder that authors are still just humans like their readers are, which makes the works themselves less intimidating. At times, I find myself intimidated by poetry because of how highly regarded the poem/poet can be, making them feel superior to the reader. By producing my own poetry,y I can see this being less of a problem for me in the future. Another thing that I would like to express about our in-class activities is that I found the experience of writing and performing poetry to be more fun than I expected. I was pretty nervous to perform my poetry, but after the fact, I enjoyed how fun it was. I also really enjoyed listening to my classmates' poems, who also did a great job! Overall, I found the experience of writing my own poetry to be very insightful and enjoyable, which I didn't think would be the case.

P.S. My poem was inspired by Karl Marx

  1. Hey Samuel!

I enjoyed your honest reflection in both writing about poetry and writing poetry. It is suuuper relatable when you talk about how writing poetry can provide a clearer insight into understanding the author's intentions and how it can make analyzing other works less intimidating. When creating your own poems, we see that every choice in diction and syntax is deliberate, allowing us to realize that poets are more complex than what meets the surface.

I liked that you talked about your own writing and performing journey-- it definitely encourages a new perspective and understanding of literature. I also really enjoyed seeing everyone else's performances and it made me more appreciative of the work we so closely dissect. Oftentimes, it's easy to see poets a certain way. However, when we see them just as people expressing raw, real emotions, it makes understanding them a lot easier.

Really intriguing read, thanks for sharing!
